High water users program

The allowable daily household limit for water use is 1200 litres per day under Restriction 1.1 of the Queensland Water Commission (QWC) Permanent Water Conservation Measures.

The QWC has delegated the responsibility to Queensland Urban Utilities to advise and monitor households using more than 1200 litres of water per day.

From 1 July 2010, the QWC has delegated responsibility for the management of Water Restrictions and Demand Management Programs in the local government areas of Brisbane, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and Somerset to Queensland Urban Utilities.

Queensland Urban Utilities, rather than your local Council, will provide you with information about Water Restrictions and Demand Management Programs.

The program is currently run in the Brisbane area only, however will be extended to the areas of Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and Somerset after July 2011.

How the Program works

As part of the quarterly meter reading cycle, households using more than 1200 litres daily without a valid reason, will be contacted by Queensland Urban Utilities.

Property owners

First meter reading

Queensland Urban Utilities will issue an ‘Advice of High Water Use’ to households using more than 1200 litres of water per day. The ‘Advice of High Water Use’ will include a fact sheet with water saving hints and tips to help residents monitor their water consumption.

Second meter reading

At the second meter read, if a household continues to use more than 1200 litres per day, Queensland Urban Utilities will send out and ‘Advice of Continued High Water Use’ and another fact sheet.

Third and subsequent meter readings

If at the third meter read a household continues to use more than 1200 litres per day, Queensland Urban Utilities will continue to monitor the property as part of future programs.

Tenanted properties

First meter reading
