What is a Metered Hydrant Standpipe

Metered hydrant standpipes are used to obtain water directly from fire hydrants on our mains for activities permitted under water conservation guidelines.

A metered hydrant standpipe is a traditional standpipe that meets Queensland Urban Utilities standards for connection to the water system, fitted with features such as a water meter, strainer and a backflow device. They are painted bright yellow to distinguish them from standpipes used in other areas.

The current user pays system requires users to:

  • be a trained operator
  • have a permit to draw water from fire hydrants in the Brisbane area
  • register their standpipes
  • keep a log of all fire hydrant use.

Each permit holder is also responsible for the maintenance and regular testing of the standpipes.

This system is fairer and more equitable, ensuring charges reflect actual consumption. It also supports our commitment to lower water consumption, reduces risks for our customers and helps protect the public water system.
