Why do you charge for trade waste disposal?

Trade waste imposes additional load on our sewerage system.  Our trade waste charges recover the cost of trade waste transport, treatment and audit activities.

Trade waste billing categories

Approval holders are assigned to a trade waste category (described below) for charging purposes. Trade waste categories link similar business types to equitable charges and relevant methods for measuring or estimating volume and strength of discharges.

Category D (major manufacturing and industrial) approval holder discharges are metered, sampled and chemically analysed to provide the basis for the quality charging. To avoid unnecessary costs small to medium approval holders (i.e. Category A, B, C, E) are usually indirectly metered (using a fraction of the potable water usage) and charged based on an assumed trade waste quality.

Below are the 2016 - 2017 fees and charges.

*Subject to Queensland Urban Utilities’ sole discretion, Category D may apply to any trade waste approval where specific conditions allow a contaminant to be discharged above the sewer acceptance criteria.

† Biochemical Oxygen Demand BOD5 is a measure of organic contaminant load within the trade waste.

# To be eligible for the beneficial BOD5 Discounted rate for a particular quarter, the customer must comply with all trade waste approval conditions and the quality of trade waste discharged must meet the following criteria:
Soluble BOD5 mass greater than 25 tonnes and less than 400 tonnes.
Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) mass less than 5% of the soluble BOD5 mass.
pH greater than or equal to 7.
No non-compliances to trade waste approval conditions in the relevant billing period.
