Cannery Creek Sewer Upgrade

Current project

Image
Urban Utilities and our delivery partner, Fulton Hogan, are delivering the Cannery Creek Sewer Upgrade project.
We live in a climate of extremes and sometimes we can experience intense rainfall events in South East Queensland that can impact our underground network.
During rainfall events, stormwater can flood our wastewater network, causing wet weather overflows which can sometimes impact private properties.
When completed, this project is expected to reduce wet weather overflows for residents in Northgate and Banyo and improve the health of Cannery Creek. The project involves a combination of traditional infrastructure (including a new wet weather pump station and over two kilometres of underground pipeline), and the creation of a nature based new wetland.

What we want to achieve

  • Reduce uncontrolled wet weather overflows on property
  • Manage risk to public in waterways to protect current uses
  • Deliver better environmental outcomes
  • Deliver project benefits at a lower cost to the community compared to a traditional infrastructure solution
Local residents have played an important role in contributing to the project design, recommending a nature-based solution. To find out more visit the project background tab or our online community hub, Watertalk.

What’s happening?

This complex upgrade project commenced mid 2022 and will be delivered in stages.
With project activities taking place in and near Cannery Creek, construction progress has relied on favourable weather conditions. Over the past six months with above-average rainfall, construction activities have been extended as the project team periodically has waited for drier ground conditions to continue progress.
You will see our delivery partner, Fulton Hogan, at various locations along Cannery Creek, including near Station Avenue, Progress Park, Nudgee Road and the wetlands off Southern Cross Way.

What to expect during construction?

  • Work hours are Monday to Friday, between 6:30am – 6:30pm, and Saturdays, between 7am -3pm subject to weather and site conditions
  • Increased levels of localised noise and dust from the use of machinery and equipment. Dust prevention includes spraying/misting water to reduce spreading
  • Increased vehicle movements on local roads and within the site compound

Current activities

  • Landscaping sediment basin 1 near Station Avenue
  • Installation of the fish protection screen at sediment basin 1 water edge
  • Completing the electrical works for the Frederick Street pump station
  • Construct the access maintenance track, install fencing, and landscaping for this pump station
  • Installation of the waterproof lining of Sediment Basin 2, placement of scour rock protection to the inlet and outlet of this basin followed by landscaping
  • Landscaping of the wetlands off Southern Cross Way
  • Placement of the access tracks along the southern side of the creek from Nudgee Road towards Carter Street
  • Placement of the access track on the northern alignment from Nudgee Road to Carter Street
We appreciate your ongoing understanding and cooperation as we complete this important work.
Please be advised that Station Avenue remains closed until further notice

Project progress to date includes:

  • Completion of the access track from Earnshaw Road to the Station Avenue pedestrian bridge
  • Installation of the mechanical screen in the underground concrete chamber on Station Avenue
  • Completion of the wet weather pump station construction and installation of pumps on Frederick Street
  • Demobilised the Station Avenue site compound to prepare for landscaping

Remaining activities:
