4 must-do Scenic Rim pit stops for Eat Local Month
Venturing to Kalbar for Eat Local Month? Gather your friends and make a sustainable weekend of it in the Scenic Rim.
Summer Land Camels
The best way to see the Scenic Rim is on the back of a camel!
Summer Land Camels in Harrisville is Australia's largest camel farm and dairy. Tour the farm and browse a range of sustainable and ethical health and wellness products made from camel milk. And of course, budding Cameleers can hop on a humped hero and take a camel ride around the farm.
Elderflower Farm
After riding camels, you may crave a sweeter-smelling adventure. Elderflower Farm is a boutique flower farm & florist set in the beautiful grounds of Scenic Rim Farm Shop & Cafe in Kalbar.
Stop by to pick up seasonal blooms, cut daily and sold in the shop, as well as a wonderful range of unique flower farm products including flower field honey, flower seeds and seedlings, vintage style homewares, garden goods and more.
The Emporium
Antiques are the perfect way to get a sustainable shopping fix. Treasure hunters: head to Emporium for Kalbar’s largest range of antiques plus a selection of beautiful homewares, gardenware, jewellery, art, clothing and skincare from local artisans.
Upon walking through the doors, you'll feel like you’re stepping back in time, and for good reason; the now heritage-listed building was originally opened in 1909 as Wiss Bros general store. The vibe is a dynamic mix of old, new and odd with an emphasis on handcrafted and sustainable.
The Overflow Estate 1895
Finish your trip with a glass of Vermentino as you look out over Lake Wyaralong from the stunning Overflow Estate 1895, a historic grazing property-turned-winery. The estate was first established in July 2010, giving new life to the gently sloping land which had been fertilised by cattle for more than a century.
The wine tells a story, too. The vines were planted with a preference towards so-called “climate change” varieties such as Vermentino, Fiano, Tempranillo and Montepulciano. These grapes are better suited to hotter and drier conditions than traditionally Australian-grown varietals like Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard is kept dry so that the roots are encouraged to go far and deep.
